Carlsbad Caverns Troop Outing Plan
On May 27th – May 30th Troop 818 is making our first ever visit to Carlsbad Caverns – the place Will Rogers calls “Grand Canyon with a ceiling.” We’ll have an opportunity to campout for 3 nights at Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas and also do some hiking through the trails.
Friday May 27th at 8:00 AM:
Depart from St Bernadette’s Church and drive to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas (513 miles). We will stop for lunch and dinner so scouts will need to bring money or a sack lunch.
Arrive and set-up camp at 7PM Texas time.
Lights out at 10:00 PM
Saturday May 28th
Early wake up at 5:45 AM
Breakfast by patrols
Drive to Carlsbad Caverns (approximately 1 hour) and spend the day exploring
Lunch is trail lunch, each scout is on their own
Travel back to the camp site by 6 PM
Dinner by Patrols
Sunday May 29th
Wake up at 6:30 AM
Breakfast by Patrols
Scouts own Service at 8:00 AM
Hiking by ability groups through Guadalupe Mountains National Park, have a camelback or containers for at least 3 liters of water.
Lunch is a trail lunch, each scout is on their own
Hiking and fun in the afternoon
Dinner is by patrols
Monday May 30th
Early wake-up at 5:45 AM. Break down camp and eat an easy to go breakfast by patrol.
7:30 AM begin travel back to Scottsdale – we will stop for lunch so bring money.
Arrive at the Church in the later afternoon – parents will be notified when we are in Tucson and then as we are closer.
The outing will be fun and scouts will be the first scouts in Troop 818’s 20 year history to adventure in this neck of the woods. Cost of the trip will be about $100 for gas and site rental, along with money for meals on the roads and money for your grub master.
