This is a beginning Backpacking outing, patrols are coordinating: Tent Buddies (bring light backpacking tents 2 or 3 man).
Every scout should bring the 10 Essentials (see your Boy Scout Hand Book), a sleeping bag, ground cover, mess kit, utensils, water container, and appropriate hiking clothing especially extra socks. The Scouts have been training and discussing this at our weekly meetings.
Backpacks should weigh no more than 20% of your body weight. So if you weigh 120 lbs., then your pack should be no more than 24 lbs.
Each patrol should bring backpacking cooking equipment such as a Jet Boil or Pocket Rocket with sufficient fuel.
Meal planning – eat breakfast prior to departure. Each Scout should have a trail lunch and snacks for Saturday. Patrols will coordinate (using their grubmaster) Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. We will have water purification and water filters for the Scouts to utilize and the spring is running.
Weather forecast – The forecast for Clarkdale calls for high of 88 on Saturday and a low of 57 at night. Sunday the high should be 93. No rain is in the forecast.
Scouts can get additional information from their Patrol Leaders (who should have the information but can get from the Senior Patrol Leader if necessary).
Scouts training for the 2017 Philmont High Adventure Trek Outing will be hiking to a more advanced location; contact Luke Rodriguez for specific details.
